We drove to Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park to hike the Sylvan Lake Shore Trail, a one mile loop. This is a beautiful lake with lots of interesting rock formations along the way. (We found it too hot to do longer hikes).
Rock formations seen on our way to the Lake Shore Trail at Sylvan Lake.
We parked in the day use area and hiked counterclockwise around the lake.
Parts of the trail were rocky and a bit steep.
These steps led up to a nice view,
I zoomed across the way where you can see a small hole in the rock int the middle left of this photo.
more rock formations
We could hear water running inside this formation.
There was a waterfall inside one of the cracks in the rock.
Water coming off the spill way on one end of the lake.
More cool rock formations
The trail led up through a gap in the rock.
We walked under the boulders trapped in the gap.
view looking back through the gap
We took the side trail to the spillway.
More views as we continued around the lake.
