Red Scar Knoll Trail

Our last hike at the Painted Hills Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument was the Red Scar Knoll Trail, 0.5 miles round trip. Beautiful area and lots of bitteroot in bloom here. We had all four of these trails to ourselves this morning. This was the view across the trail from the road:

Elephant Rock at Seal Rock State Recreation Area

We stopped at Seal Rock State Recreation Area along the Oregon Coast to see Elephant Rock and walk the short loop trail there (about 1/2 mile).

The north end of Elephant Rock (on the left side of this photo), this does look like an elephant head and truck to me.

Cap Stone Trail

Our second hike at Makoshika State Park was the Cap Stone Trail. This is a 0.5 mile loop trail with 200 ft of loss/gain. We hiked counterclockwise along the loop. View of part of the trail from the trailhead. There was a light rain throughout our hike, we were the only ones on the trail.
