Fern Canyon at Van Damm State Park

We drove down to Van Damm State Park south of Mendocino to hike the Fern Canyon Loop from the east end. We also did the short 0.25 mile Pygmy Forest. Overall this was a 4 mile hike, a nice place to be on a rainy morning. We had this trail to ourselves this morning.
The trees are very stunted in the Pygmy Forest Natural Preserve because of the poor soil.
Close by, the redwood and other trees are very tall. This burnt out stump is the remnant of a very large redwood tree.
Along the Fern Canyon Loop, we crossed 10 wooden bridges over Little River.

This is a beautiful forest.
A tree is growing on top of a very large stump.
There are  many ferns in Fern Canyon

To complete the loop, we left the Fern Canyon Trail and returned along the Old Logging Road Trail.

These beautiful bright red leaves are most likely poison oak
