Ancient Lakes Winter Hike

We went looking for sunshine today and found it at Ancient Lakes near Quincey. There are many trails and boot tracks in this area. We did about 6 miles with 450 ft of elevation gain. The yellow line marks our approximate route today. It was fun finding some ways I hadn't been before.

The main track from the parking area is easily seen.

We stayed in the north coulee, there were several falls coming off the cliffs

Most of the snow is melted and the lakes have a varying amount of ice on the surface. We didn't see any flowers, but the grasses were pretty.

Waterfall at the east end of the coulee.

From the base of the waterfall looking southeast down the coulee and the wall we are headed to.
We wandered around the other lakes on our way across the coulee.
There was minimal snow and ice on the coulee wall.

As we headed up the wall, we had a nice view down into the lake basin.

There was a lot of scree on the way up to the first viewpoint overlooking the next coulee.

View of Dusty Lake in the next Coulee from one of the viewpoints.
Wide angle view of Dusty Lake from another viewpoint.

View of the coulee from the far east end, as we came down the wall. Snow hills are seen to the west across the Columbia River.

Looking back up at the southern coulee wall we had been on

Some interesting rocks we saw along our hike:
