We were able to get 2 permits to North Coyote Buttes in the Paria Canyon/Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness via the online lottery. We have been trying to get permits for 4 years, so we are extremely happy to do this hike. We hired a guide to take us to maximize our time and what we could see in the area. Overall, we did about 9 miles of hiking with 1,300 ft of gain. We started at Wire Pass in southern Utah as the sun was rising over the hills.
This area has such beautiful scenery and gorgeous rock formations long before we reached "The Wave".
Some of the scenery we hiked though on our way out to the Wave, at some point we crossed into Arizona.
Looking back through where we hiked as we got closer to The Wave.
Neon Rocks
other side of Neon Rocks
The colors of the rocks in the shade were so intense! (the only editing of photos in this post was some cropping on some of the pictures, no colors were enhanced or changed).
Entering the area know as The Wave
Classic view of The Wave.
I'm so thrilled we were able to obtain permits and come here!
We found a place to sit, eat lunch and enjoy the view!!!
more views at the Wave
Hiking above the Wave and looking back down
High above us is Top Rock Arch, later we would be up on the ridge to the right.
Area between the Wave and the Second Wave
another view of Top Rock Arch
the Second Wave
We then hiked clockwise around the whole rocky area that continues the Wave and so much more (I believe it is called Top Rock)
.
Rock formations known as Teepees in the distance to the south
High up in the rock formation in the back is a hard to see from here arch: Melody Arch, we would work our way around and hike up to the other side of this arch.
Our initial view of Melody Arch
one view of Melody Arch looking up to the sky
another view, looking through the arch to the Teepees
Standing in front of the opening of the arch and looking towards the arch behind.
from the other side of that far arch
We continued our way around from high up on Top Rock
view looking way down to the Wave and the area we hiked in from this morning
From the same area looking east towards Top Rock Arch
We then scrambled down to see more of the Second Wave
We were up there on Top Rock
another view looking up towards Top Rock Arch, and the area we were on to the right.
Hiking back down to the Wave.
Another look up to Top Rock Arch though the Wave.
On our way back to the trailhead, the colors of the Neon Rock, is more intense in this winter afternoon sun.
