Goat Rocks Backpack Day 1: Snowgrass to Cispus Basin

We drove down to the Snowgrass TH (leaving another car at the Berry Patch TH) to back pack in the Goat Rock Wilderness for 3 days. Our first day, we pack backed up through Snowgrass Flats to the PCT (5.5 miles with 1,780' gain). We set up camp about 0.3 mile south, then day hiked over to Cispus Basin and back (an additional 4 miles round trip with 450' of overall gain.
The trail up to Snowgrass Flats is wooded.
View of the creek from the wooden bridge.

a small creek further up the trail
From Snowgrass Flats we headed up towards the PCT, here we had nice views of the Goat Rocks
Although most of the wildflowers are gone, we saw lots of gentian in bloom over our 3 days in the Goat Rocks

Trail junction of the Snowgrass Trail with the PCT, Mt Adams to the south. About 0.3 miles down this trail we found a nice campsite off of the trail in the shelter of the trees.

Some fields along the trail had fireweed and other wildflowers in bloom.
We saw lots of butterflies and bees among the flowers.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Columbine still in bloom.

We also found ripe huckleberries to eat.

First view into Cispus Basin
Waterfall along the trail.

Near the waterfall were these yellow monkey flowers

We enjoyed a break at these waterfalls, where several PCT hikers stopped to get water.

Wide angle view of Cispus Basin

Enjoyed watching the butterflies on these cascade asters as we headed back to camp

Bright red leaves, remind us that fall is coming to the mountains.

View of the Goat Rocks near our camp, Old Snowy is on the left, our destination for tomorrow.

Lots of pink and yellow monkeyflowers as well as willow-herb in bloom along the stream near our camp where we filtered water.
Field full of pasqueflower seed heads.

some of the other wildflowers, butterflies and other insects and fungi we saw along the trail on our first day:
