Heybrook Lookout Winter Hike

Second of our three hikes today. We went up to Heybrook Lookout in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie NF near Index on Hwy 2 today. A short 2.6 mile rt hike with 850 ft of elevation gain.  The trail starts in the forest along side of Hwy 2, but

there is a gorgeous view looking across at Mt Index!

 I love the wooden walkways,
 interesting trees,
trickling water with moss, ferns & fungi.
 The trail soon becomes steep,
before leveling out for a short break (although we did need to go under and over some trees here).
Another short, steep section and we arrived at Heybrook Lookout.

There are 89 steps to the top,

but they are on nice stairs, not ladders.
Although the very top section was closed, we still had nice views.

Looking south to Mt Index and Mt Persis

We could see Bridal Veil Falls across the valley (zoom photo)
view of mountains to the east.

This is a popular hike, so there are aggressive gray jays hanging around.
