Devil's Playground

We drove to Petrified Forest National Park and stopped at the Visitor Center this morning to see if we could get one of the 3 permits given per week to hike in the Devil's Playground area in the Petrified Forest Wilderness Area. Each week the permits are started to be given out on Wednesday, until 3 permits are picked up. The permit has to be used the day it is picked up. There are no "trails", but directions are given on where to park, and how to get down to the large wash.
From the wash there were posts that led to the gated area, about 2 miles away< to reach the Devil's Playground.
Across the big wash, we saw a windmill.
Following the posts into an interesting area on our way to the Devil's Playground.
I like the exposed sandstone under the boulders.
Beautiful variegated colors of white, blue and grey.
Lots of hoodoos
After hiking about 2 miles, the posts led us to this entrance through the fence into the Devil's Playground, from here there were no more posts nor trails.
We had fun exploring in the Devil's Playground. Here are some of the Hoodoos and other rock formations we saw along the way.

There were some large petrified wood stumps near these huge boulders.
Continuing through the Devil's Playground.

On the way back to the car.
