Davis Peak

Yesterday, we drove out to Salmon La Sac to meet some friends and hike up Davis Peak. Part of the trail crosses into the Alpine Lake Wilderness. This trail is 10 miles round trip with 4,000 ft of gain. Fabulous views from the peak and wonderful wildflowers. We only saw 5 other hikers along the trail. The trail drops down a short ways to cross over the Cle Elum River.

View of the Cle Elum River from the bridge.

After crossing the river, the trail goes up through the forest for about 2 miles. We saw some woodland wildflowers and then we passed some meadows. Lots of lupine in bloom.

some balsalmroot in bloom

The trail then leaves the forest and travels up the rocky slopes.

The trail goes through a burn area. Mt Rainier in the distance.

On a ridge line below the top, the wildflowers covered the slopes.

This was a gorgeous section of the trail. Up along this ridge, the trail turns right and drops down into the forest before going up to the top of Davis Peak. This junction was covered in snow and we missed it.

We ended up following a well defined trail (with some scrambling) up this small peak, before realizing we had missed the turn.

Looking down to the southwest, you can see the small peak we climbed by mistake and Cle Ellum Lake far below
This was the small but deep bit of snow that covered the turn in the trail.

After dropping into the trees and crossing the basin, the trail agains climbs up the side of Davis Peak on a mostly open slope. View of Cle Ellum Lake below and Mt Rainier in the far distance.

As we neared the top, we could see Mount Stuart to the east.

Pano to the east from near the site of the old lookout on Davis Peak:

The trail continues for another half mile along the top ridge of Davis Peak. Looking northeast down toward Opal Lake.

To the southwest, below is the small peak we climbed by mistake, and Cle Ellum Lake far below.

The trail crosses a short catwalk and goes around this peak on Davis Peak,

to reveal this stunning view to the north: Cascade Peaks, including Mt Daniel and Cathedral Rock; Lake Terrence in the foreground, Waptus Lake in the distance.

We enjoyed these views and took a lunch break on the peak.

Heading back across the ridge top of Davis Peak, here is the short catwalk.
A wonderful day, hiking among the views and wildflowers.
