Moose Viewing Trail

Our sixth and final stop along the Gunflint Trail (on our drive back), we stopped and did the Moose Viewing Trail, 0.6 miles round trip, in Superior National Forest. We did not see any moose, but walked through the forest to a large pond and saw wildflowers blooming along the trail.

Gunflint Lake

OUr fifth stop along the Gunflint Lake was along the west shore of Gunflint Lake in Superior National Forest for a spot of fishing. Beautiful area!

Topper Lake

Our fourth stop along the Gunflint Trail today was to hike a portage route to Topper Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. We started at a pullout on the Mayhew Lake Road near Mayhew Lake in Superior National Forest, and soon entered the Boundarty Waters, this was less than 1 mile round trip. Through the forest with muddy places, we saw a toad, dragonflies, swallowtail butterflies and some wildflowers and fungus. Lovely little hike!

Laurentian Overlook

Our third stop along the Gunflint Trail today was at the Lauentian Overlook. This is a continental drainage boundary, a ridge where the water to the north drains into Hudson Bay and the Arctic, the water to the south drains into the Great Lakes or the Gulf of Mexico. We found the area covered in trees, so we took the very short path down to Birch Lake, we saw a few wildflowers in bloom here.

Honeymoon Bluff

Our second stop along the Gunflint Trail was the short hike up Honeymoon Bluff, 3/4 mile with 90 ft of elevation gain, overlooking Hungry Jack Lake in Superior National Forest.
