Mt Zion via Deadfall Trail
We drove to the Deadfall Trailhead in Olympic National Forest near Quilcene to hike up to Mt Zion on a cloudy day near the end of summer to look for fungi. On our hike up, we took the side South Ridge Trail option and retuned via the Deadfall Trail, 7.25 miles round trip with 2,350 ft of overall gain. Along with a variety of fungi, we saw a few wildflowers, some berries and slime. We were especially excited to find both the bloody tooth fungi
and the gnome plant
This is a trail through the forest with a few viewpoints. The summit of Mt Zion is in the tress. It was very quiet in the forest today, we saw no animals nor humans, only heard a few crows. Views in the forest along the start of the Deadfall Trail
Heading up the South Ridge Trail
At the first view point, we had some local views
The clouds obscured the views up at the other viewpoints
The trees have grown all around the top of Mt Zion, even on a clear day, I don't think there is a view
some of the wildflowers, berries and more fungi (including more bloody tooth fungi) and slime seen along our route today
