We are having beautiful fall weather and the road up to Sunrise at Mt Rainier National Park has been kept open. We decided to hike the 3 Burroughs Mountains while the road is still open. We hiked about 9 miles with 2,700 ft of overall elevation gain. We started by taking the trail from the south side of the parking area out to Shadow Lake and the Sunrise Rim Trail.
View of Mt Rainier from early on along the trail.
The shallow edges of Shadow Lake were frozen in the morning.

zoom looking at the pretty tarn in Glacier Basin and the White River flowing out form under the Emmons Glacier.
Looking east along Glacier Basin
Wide angle view of Mt Rainier and Glacier Basin as we hike along the south side of First Burroughs. Second and Third Burroughs are to the far right.

This chipmunk was jumping all over the rocks while we had our lunch break.
Some more wide angle views of Mt Rainier from Third Burroughs
Was nice to look down towards the far end of the Winthrop Glacier, Mystic Lake and Old Desolate where we had hiked to in August
After returning up and down Second Burroughs, we took the trail to the north side of First Burroughs, looking back at the top of First Burroughs and Second and Third Burroughs in front of Mt Rainier
This part of the trail receives very little sun and the leftover snow was quite icy. We were glad we had our poles.
